I am often asked for suggestions on how to learn to needlepoint. And specifically what is the best beginner canvas. Below, I have collected a group of more than eight small needlepoint projects that would be great to learn on.

The Best Beginner Needlepoint Canvases

I always suggest learning how to needlepoint on a small project (something that can often be made into a coaster or Christmas ornament) vs. a larger project like a needlepoint belt or big pillow. This way, you can learn the process. And maybe even make some mistakes without being overly committed to a large project that might take a long time to complete.

If possible, I suggest buying the canvas as a ‘kit’. Which means the store will send you not only the needlepoint canvas but also the threads for that project. It includes everything you need to get started: a small canvas, the matching threads, scissors, needles and a cute bag to keep your project organized.

If you have a needlepoint store in your town or driving distance – it can often be great to go shop in person vs. ordering one of these kits online. As someone in the shop can give you lots of pointers and directions as you learn how to needlepoint. (But of course, you can always order one of these projects online. And teach yourself with YouTube videos and various online tutorials.)

Like every time you try a new hobby or learn a new craft, it will take some time, patience and practice to learn how to needlepoint. But your effort will be well worth it once you get the hang of it! I often compare needlepointing to riding a bike, once you figure it out you are off the races!
