7 Sweaters to Have In Your Closet - Simply Elegant Blog

Hello, sweater weather.

As we enter into fall and the temperatures start to dip, it is time to update your sweater collection. From a basic crewneck to a chunky cableknit, find my suggestions for seven sweater styles you need in your closet this fall. These sweaters I own and wear, season after season, year after year. Do you have a favorite fall sweater? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. A Classic Cashmere Cableknit

I suggest the tried and true from Ralph Lauren. It is a splurge, but a closet staple that you will wear season after season that never goes out of style.

  2. Lightweight Turtleneck

When the temperatures start to dip, sometimes there is nothing better than a classic turtleneck. J.McLaughlin’s Arlette Turtleneck is the ideal lightweight ribbed turtleneck that everyone should have in their closet to pair with jeans to a chic skirt.

J.Crew’s Tissue Turtleneck is another closet staple (*note, this turtleneck is a thin t-shirt material, not a sweater.)

  3. Striped Sweater

In my mind, no one does stripes better than La Ligne, and their Marin Striped Sweater, offered in a wide array of hues, is perfection. (The sweater is a wool/cashmere mix, but no need to fret about the wool being scratchy; it is super soft thanks to the cashmere.) Are you interested in a more tailored style? Try their cropped Marin sweater.

  4. The Sweater Jacket

Jenni Kayne’s Sweater Coat is one of my go-to items all year long. The open front, cardigan style cashmere sweater is a closet workhorse; I own it in grey, but love it so much that I am considering buying a second in the oatmeal colorway next. I wear it over a dress on chilly summer nights in Maine or as a layering piece come winter.

For a more budget-friendly style, J.Crew’s Collarless Sweater Blazer is similar for half the price.

  5. The Classic Crewneck

The wear with everything, basic crewneck is something everyone needs in their closet. Go with this Jenni Kayne Crewneck in a neutral hue so it can mix and match with everything else in your wardrobe. If you are looking for a more budget-friendly alternative, this Halogen Crewneck is a great option.

  6. Oversized Cableknit

The best oversized, heavyweight cableknit turtleneck is the Le Square style from AYR. The oversized, loose cut of the sweater makes it feel like you are wearing an oversized sweatshirt, but you look much more polished. (Aka, perfect for your zoom calls!) I have this in two colors (cream and black) and have had mine for over 2 years (a good, investment sweater should last season after season!

While we are at it, be sure to look at this cozy, oversized cable knit cardigan from H&M before it sells out! I just picked this up the other day, and I am so impressed by how soft and comfortable the sweater is (especially for the price!) = a total steal.

  7. The Novelty Sweater

Lastly, we all need a few bold, colorful, and unique sweaters in our closet, which can instantly elevate a simple look and make a statement. Start with an embroidered style from Lingua Franca or Le Lion.
