The best sweaters styles that every woman should have in her closet.
Hello, sweater weather!
As we enter into fall and the temperatures start to dip, it is time to take an inventory of your knitwear collection and make any necessary updates. From cozy striped crewnecks to structured cardigans, these are seven sweater styles that every woman should have in her closet. The sweaters you can rewear season after season, year after year.
Do you have a favorite fall sweater? Let me know in the comments below.
The wear with everything, basic crewneck sweater is something every woman needs in her closet. My favorites are from Jenni Kayne or La Ligne. I recently discovered LouLou Studio and love this brown cashmere blend crewneck that is a bit longer with slits at the side. Additionally, I just bought a beautiful blue oversized Marin Sweater and I already love it! This cashmere style from Anine Bing is on my one day / someday wishlist! f you are looking for styles at lower price points, I love Cos, Nordstrom, Alice Walk or J.Crew sweaters. I also own some lovely sweaters from Sister Katie, as a smaller brand their styles typically sell out quickly and for good reason, they are really well made and extremely cozy and soft.
My favorite cashmere cable knit is this classic style from Ralph Lauren. It is a bit of a splurge, but a closet staple that you will wear season after season that never goes out of style. If you want something a tad more wallet friendly, you could borrow this style from the boys. I also own this oversized cable knit from Toteme and reach for it often. I would also look at Eleanore Leftwich’s new knitwear styles (they are on my wishlist) as they are made of luxury cashmere and knit in the United States.
I love a thin ribbed sweater paired with jeans or a skirt for a polished everyday outfit. I own a few color ways of the Cecily Top from Anine Bing and wear them all the time. If you prefer a turtleneck style, this style from J.McLaughlin is a great choice.
Cardigans sweaters having a major resurgence these days but I have always loved this classic sweater style. In my mind, some of the very best knitwear is from Khaite; their pieces are a big investment but the quality is truly unmatched. The Khaite Scarlet Cardigan is a piece you will own and wear for years. I also LOVE the Cooper Cardigan from Jenni Kayne and it looks just as chic as Khaite but is a 1/3 of the price. If you are looking for a chunky cardigan, I recommend this style from Tuckernuck or knitwear designs from MIRTH.
In my mind, no one does stripe sweaters better than La Ligne; their Marin Striped Sweater is offered in a wide array of hues and is just the best cozy layer. (The sweater is a wool/cashmere mix, but no need to fret about the wool being scratchy; it is super soft and cozy thanks to the cashmere.) If you love this striped look, I also suggest their striped cardigan style.
One of my go-to outfits is a pair of jeans, a solid t-shirt and a knit ‘lady jacket.’ These polished and cropped styles are the perfect combination of a jacket and a sweater, usually with eye-catching gold buttons. The best classic ‘lady jacket’ is this style from J.Crew that is available in both stripes or solid colors.
Lastly, we all need a few bold, colorful, and unique sweaters in our closet, which can instantly elevate a simple look and make a statement. Start with an embroidered style from Lingua Franca or Le Lion.
There you have it, 7 knitwear pieces that are ideal to own and wear on rotation.
